Andrei Igorevich Svechnikov, born on March 26, 2000, is a Russian ice hockey winger playing for the Carolina Hurricanes in the NHL. He was drafted second overall by the Hurricanes in the 2018 NHL Entry Draft. He has been playing for the Carolina Hurricanes since the beginning of his professional career. Before the NHL, Svechnikov was selected first overall in the 2017 Canadian Hockey League (CHL) Import Draft by the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) Barrie Colts, earning awards such as the Emma Family Award in his rookie season for his performances and was later declared as the top-ranked North American skater by the NHL Central Scouting Bureau.

On October 4, 2018, Svechnikov made his NHL debut by going scoreless in a 2-1 loss to the New York Islanders. A day later, he successfully recorded his first career NHL point as an assist in a 3-1 win over the Columbus Blue Jackets. Svechnikov then went on to ink an eight-year contract worth $62 million, following his impressive showings in the league over some time.

Andrei Svechnikov was born to Elena Svechnikov and Igor Svechnikov. They used to live in Neftegorsk on Sakhalin Island in eastern Russia. But after a deadly earthquake struck the town, they moved to Barnaul, an industrial city north of China, between Kazakhstan and Mongolia. Later, when Andrei was nine, they moved to the bigger hockey-mad city of Moscow, where Andrei developed his skills even further. Andrei's elder brother, Evgency Svechnikov, also used to play in the NHL before moving to Russia to play for the Ak Bars Kazan.

Talking about their childhood, Svechnikov's older brother, Evgency Svechnikov, said, “We didn’t have much food. It was tough, but we got through it. It made the relationship with my family even better.”

Andrei Svechnikov’s father is Igor Svechinkov. Igor had been a pediatrician prior to a deadly earthquake that struck the town of Neftegorsk on Sakhalin Island in eastern Russia in May 1995. This disaster killed almost 4000 citizens in the region with Igor Svechikov being one of the two doctors present in that region. However, witnessing the suffering of the people there became too much for him to bear and he soon gave up medicine. He then moved to Barnual in Siberia to sell cakes, as per Sportsnet.
