Cale Makar is a Canadian ice hockey defenseman in the National Hockey League, playing for the Colorado Avalanche (as of January 2025). Makar has received several awards including the Calder Memorial Trophy for Rookie of the Year and the Norris Trophy for the league's best defenseman. In his NHL debut during the 2019 Stanley Cup playoffs, he scored his first career goal, becoming the first defenseman to do so in his debut. Makar made the Avalanche's roster for the 2019–20 season and earned many accolades, including being named a Calder Memorial Trophy finalist. He returned for the 2020–21 season, finishing as a Norris Trophy finalist and signing a six-year extension with the Avalanche.

In the 2021–22 season, Makar had a standout performance, setting records for goals by a defenseman in a single season for the Avalanche and winning the Norris Trophy. He was pivotal in the Avalanche's successful playoff run, winning the Stanley Cup and earning the Conn Smythe Trophy as the postseason's MVP. In the following season (2022–23), Makar achieved his 200th career point in just 195 games, becoming the fastest defenseman to reach this milestone.

According to Sportsnet, his name is after former NHL player Cale Hulse. His younger brother, Taylor, attended UMass-Amherst and was drafted by the Avalanche in the seventh round of the 2021 NHL Entry Draft. Makar's cousin Mark Logan also played collegiate hockey at the Rochester Institute of Technology. Tom Lysiak, his father's cousin, is part of his extended family.
