Charlie McAvoy Jr. is an American professional ice hockey defenseman for the Boston Bruins as their alternate captain in the National Hockey League (NHL), as of February 2025. McAvoy was chosen as the 14th overall pick by the Bruins in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft and has been with them ever since. Prior to joining the Bruins, McAvoy played for the USA Hockey National Team Development Program (USNTDP) in the United States Hockey League for two seasons. He also committed to playing college hockey at Boston University in August 2013. He played alongside star defenseman Matt Grzelcyk during the 2015-16 NCAA men’s ice hockey season, Following this, he made his NHL playoff debut on April 1, 2017, against the Ottawa Senators

Internationally, McAvoy has won gold medals at various junior levels, including the 2015 IIHF World U18 Championship and the 2017 World Junior Championship. He also led all defensemen in scoring at the 2018 IIHF World Championship, winning a bronze medal.
