Born on March 31, 1998, in Boca Raton, Florida, he began playing with the Florida Jr. Panthers before moving to Canada to further his development. He played minor hockey with the Toronto Jr. Canadiens. Chychrun started his Major junior hockey career after being drafted as the first overall pick by the Sarnia Sting in the 2014 OHL Priority Selection.
