John Tavares

John Tavares is a Canadian ice hockey forward and as of October 2024, is an alternate captain for the Toronto Maple Leafs in the NHL. He was selected first overall by the New York Islanders in the 2009 NHL Draft and spent nine seasons with the team, serving as captain for five. Before his NHL career, Tavares played for the Oshawa Generals and London Knights in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL), where he earned the title of CHL Rookie of the Year in 2006 and Player of the Year in 2007.

Tavares achieved exceptional player status at age 14, making him eligible for the OHL early. He finished his OHL career with a record-setting 215 goals, the most in league history, and was ranked as the top prospect for the 2009 NHL Draft. Although attempts to let him join the NHL or AHL earlier were unsuccessful. Tavares also has played in other international competitions like the World Championships and U-18 Championships.
