The Stanley Cup was established in 1893, with the Montreal Hockey Club winning the first championship. However, it wasn't until 1927, when the Ottawa Senators won the Cup, that teams began awarding rings.

For many years, players had to buy their rings. In the 1950s, the Detroit Red Wings gave silverware or hosted dinners instead of awarding rings. The Toronto Maple Leafs, in the 1960s, gave players a single ring with diamonds added for each subsequent win. Since 1972, all winning teams have won more rings than the number of names on the Stanley Cup. In 2011, the Boston Bruins gave out 504 rings, and in 2018, the Washington Capitals gave out 152 rings.
