Born on July 17, 1991, Oliver Oscar Emanuel Ekman-Larsson was drafted sixth overall by the Phoenix Coyotes in the 2009 National Hockey League (NHL) Entry Draft and soon became a key player in the Coyotes system. This was evidenced by him leading the team in scoring during the 2014–15 and 2015–16 seasons. Around the same time, Ekman also made the NHL All-Star Game while breaking multiple league and team records. This included most game-winning goals by a defenceman in a single NHL season and also becoming the first Sweden born defenseman to score more than 20 goals in a single season.

However, in 2021, he waived off his no-trade clause and joined the Vancouver Canucks on a six-year deal. Nonetheless, the Canucks bought out the rest of the contract in 2023 and he later joined the Florida Panthers on a one-year, $2.25 million deal.
