Patrick Timothy Kane II, also known as Patrick Kane, is a professional ice hockey right winger in the National Hockey League (NHL), who is currently playing as a free agent for the Detroit Red Wings. Kane was drafted as the first overall pick in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft by the Chicago Blackhawks and played for them for the majority of his career. Kane started his hockey journey in his hometown Buffalo where he played for the Buffalo Saints 14U AAA hockey club. Seeing his talent, the Honeybaked 16U AAA hockey club personally recruited him. During his time in the Honeybaked, he demonstrated his scoring ability with 82 goals and 77 assists. Kane soon advanced to the Ontario Hockey League where the London Knights drafted him.

However, he decided to play for the United States National Team Development Program (NTDP) in Michigan. Kane spent the following two years with the US NTDP, where he showcased his determination and commitment to the sport. He eventually debuted in the Ontario Hockey League in the 2006-07 season with the London Knights after honing his skills with the NTDP. During his rookie season, he combined with future NHL forwards Sergei Kostitsyn and Sam Gagner for a total of 394 points with Kane alone tallying 145 points. Kane later won the Emms Family Award as OHL’s Rookie of the Year.

Patrick Kane’s NHL Teams

Throughout his illustrious career, Patrick Kane has played for three teams. These include the Chicago Blackhawks, New York Rangers and Detroit Red Wings.

Chicago Blackhawks (2007-23)

Patrick Kane has played the majority of his career with the Chicago Blackhawks.

Kane made his NHL debut on October 4, 2007, against the Minnesota Wild and recorded his first assist alongside his first shootout goal two days later against the Detroit Red Wings. Kane contributed 21 goals and 51 assists across 82 games during his rookie season, earning him the Calder Memorial Trophy as NHL's Rookie of the Year.

The 2008-09 season saw him leading the Blackhawks in the playoffs, where he recorded his first career hat-trick in the Conference Finals. In the Stanley Cup finals, Kane scored an overtime goal that helped the Blackhawks win the Stanley Cup after a 49-year drought. He also became the youngest player to hit an overtime goal for a Stanley Cup win.

During the 2013 playoffs, Kane scored important goals in game 5 for the Western Cup Finals and led his team to the Stanley Cup Finals. He was named for the Conn Smythe Trophy that year as the Playoffs MVP. The following season, Kane scored 11 goals and recorded 12 assists in the playoffs which eventually helped Blackhawks win their second Stanley Cup in four years. Kane’s dominance continued in the 2015 playoffs, as the Blackhawks won their third Stanley Cup in six years. Kane contributed with timely goals and assists that helped the Blackhawks win the championship.

Notably, Kane had a record breaking season in 2015-16, where he secured the Art Ross Trophy, Hart Memorial Trophy, and Ted Lindsay Award as he became the first American player since Doug Weight to reach 100 points in a season.

New York Rangers (2023)

On February 28, 2023, his 16 years long journey with the Blackhawks came to a close as he was traded to the New York Rangers. He appeared in 19 regular season games for them, contributing five goals and seven assists.

Kane also appeared in the playoffs for the Rangers, where he contributed with a sole goal and five assists across seven games. His stay with the New York Rangers was short-lived as he joined the Detroit Red Wings the following season as a free agent.

Detroit Red Wings (2023-present)

On November 28, 2023, Kane joined the Detroit Red Wings as a free agent, signing a one-year, $2.75 million contract with them. He played his first game with them on December 7, and scored his first goal in his second game against the Ottawa Senators. Kane had a six-game point streak in December, where he scored a total of five goals and 6 assists. More recently on February 25, he scored an overtime goal, which resulted in a win for the Red Wings. Additionally, he received a standing ovation from the fans after the game. On June 30, 2024, Kane signed a one-year contract extension with the Red Wings
