Ryan Nugent-Hopkins is an alternate captain for the Edmonton Oilers in the National Hockey League (NHL). Nugent-Hopkins was the No. 1 pick in the Western Hockey League Bantam Draft in 2008 and proved himself as an elite scorer for the Red Deer Rebels, with 31 goals and 75 points during the WHL 2010-11 season. This led to the Edmonton Oilers selecting him in the 2011 NHL Draft as the No. 1 pick. As an NHL rookie, he scored 52 points in 62 games, finishing second in the Calder Trophy voting for the League's top rookie. Nugent-Hopkins signed a seven-year contract with the Oilers in September 2013 and was selected to the NHL All-Star Game in 2015.
He reached 100 points for the first time in his NHL career during a game against the Anaheim Ducks on April 5, 2023, joining Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl in making the Oilers the first NHL team since the 1995-96 Pittsburgh Penguins to have three players achieve this milestone in the same season. Nugent-Hopkins became the sixth player in NHL history to get his first 100-point season in his 12th season or later, a feat matched only by Tampa Bay Lightning captain Steven Stamkos in the past 50 years.
