The Stanley Cup has been engraved with over 3,400 names since its inception. Only four official engravers have been responsible for this task. Players must appear in at least 41 regular-season games or one Stanley Cup Final game to be eligible for engraving, with a team able to petition for additional players' names in special cases. The maximum number of names per championship team is 55.
The first Stanley Cup champion was the Montreal Amateur Athletic Association in 1893, with the Ottawa Senators winning the first Cup competed for by only NHL teams in 1927. The Montreal Canadiens hold the record with 24 championships, which is the most of any team in NHL history.
