About Rio Open 2023
The Rio Open, also known as the Rio Open represented by Claro, is the only ATP Tour 500 clay-court event that takes place in South America.
Carlos Alcaraz won last year’s edition of the tournament by beating Diego Schwartzman in the final. Simone Bolelli and Fabio Fognini won the men’s doubles event by beating Jamie Murray and Bruno Soares in the final.
Alcaraz will attempt to defend his title this season as the top seed while Cameron Norrie is seeded second. 2017 champion Dominic Thiem will also compete at the 2023 Rio Open, receiving a wildcard.
History
The inaugural edition of the Rio Open took place in 2014 with King of Clay Rafael Nadal winning it by beating Alexandr Dolgopolov in the final. Juan Sebastian Farah and Robert Farah won the men’s doubles tournament
WTA events were also part of the Rio Open but were discontinued in 2016. A new event named Hungarian Ladies Open was introduced as the replacement but in 2019, it was also abolished.
Dates & Venue
The Rio Open is played on the outdoor clay courts of Jockey Club Brasileiro which is located in Gávea, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. In 2019, the event was planned to be moved to the outdoor hard courts at the Olympic Tennis Centre. The major reason behind the plan was to gather the interest of top players such as Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray.
The tournament is held on the eight clay courts, including a 6,200-seat Stadium of the Jockey Club Brasileiro. The Rio Open will take place from 20-26 February 2023.
