Ben McLemore: A Brief Biography

Born in St. Louis, Missouri, on February 11, 1993, Ben Edward McLemore III is a professional American basketball player. He plays for the Shandong Hi-Speed Kirin as a shooting guard in the Chinese Basketball Association (CBA). Previously, Ben played for several teams in the National Basketball Association from 2013 to 2022. After finishing his high school and college basketball career, McLemore joined the NBA league in 2013.

Ben McLemore was born into a large family. He is the fourth of five children of his parents. His father’s name is Ben McLemore II, and his mother is Sonya Reid. He grew up in St. Louis, Missouri and went through a very tough time. The whole family underwent extreme poverty, and his mother had to work hard to support the family. It motivated Ben to work harder to fight difficulties in life and succeed. Later, McLemore did his schooling and college in Houston, Virginia and Kansas.

After finishing his college career, McLemore made himself available for the NBA draft. The Sacramento Kings drafted him in the 2013 NBA draft with the 7th overall pick. He agreed to a rookie scale contract with the Kings in July 2013 to play for them in the 2013 NBA Summer League. In November 2013, Ben was named the Western Conference Rookie of the Month. He also participated in the 2014 Sprite Slam Dunk contest and scored a season-high 31 points in the regular season’s final game.


McLemore played all 82 games to average 8.8 points and 2.9 rebounds per game in his rookie season. Ben rejoined the Sacramento Kings in July 2014 to play in the 2014 NBA Summer League. He averaged 12.6 points in seven games and helped them win the championship. Further, Ben scored a season-high 27 points in a victory against the Hornets on March 11, 2015. McLemore averaged 12.1 points, 1.7 assists and 2.9 rebounds per game in 2014-15 where he started all 82 regular season games.


The Sacramento Kings utilized their 4th-year team option on Ben’s rookie scale contract on October 3, 2015. Ben witnessed a season-best game on December 5 against the Houston Rockets with 19 points and 9 rebounds. In January 2016, McLemore secured a season-high 26 points against the New Orleans Pelicans.


With a multi-year contract, Ben McLemore joined the Memphis Grizzlies on July 7, 2017. However, Ben stayed away from the court for approximately twelve weeks due to his fractured right foot. He was then assigned to the Memphis Hustle (NBA G League) on November 2, 2017.


Ben was recalled soon to play his debut game for the Grizzlies on November 11, 2017. He posted two rebounds and 4 points in his debut game against the Houston Rockets. McLemore scored a season-high 17 points in a loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder on December 9, 2017. He secured a new season-high 21 points on January 19, 2018, in a game against the Sacramento Kings.


Ben McLemore returned to the Sacramento Kings on July 17, 2018, in exchange for Garrett Temple. The Kings waived Ben on February 7, 2019, however. After that, McLemore joined the Houston Rockets on July 23, 2019, scoring a season-high 28 points on December 5, 2019. He was waived by the Rockets on April 3, 2021.


McLemore signed a contract with the Los Angeles Lakers on April 6, 2021, and played his debut game against the Miami Heat on April 8. Later, Ben moved to the Portland Trail Blazers on August 5, 2021, and scored 6 points against the Suns in his debut game for the team on October 23. Ben McLemore came under a one-year deal with the Shandong Hi-Speed Kirin on January 31, 2023. It is a franchise under the Chinese Basketball Association (CBA).
