Maria Sakkari is a Greek tennis player who achieved a career-high singles ranking of No. 3 in March 2022 and is ranked No. 8 by the WTA as of July 2024. She was introduced to tennis by her parents when she was six, and moved to Barcelona to train professionally at the age of 18. Sakkari also appeared in the popular Netflix documentary Break Point, which was released in January 2023.

Sakkari is a right-handed player with a powerful style of play. Her serve is her favorite shot and her preferred surfaces are hard and clay. Her best Grand Slam performances include a semifinal appearance at the 2021 French Open, where she lost to Barbora Krejčíková, and another semifinal appearance at the 2021 US Open, where she lost to Emma Raducanu. Maria Sakkar reached her first WTA final in 2018, at the San Jose Classic, where she defeated Venus Williams and Danielle Collins, before losing to Mihaela Buzărnescu in the final.

Her other achievements include finishing semifinalist at the 2021 and 2022 WTA Finals. Sakkari started her current season by competing in team competition at the 2024 United Cup.

She won all her matches in straight sets against Angelique Kerber, Leylah Fernandez and Daniela Seguel. She also reached the final of the 2024 Indian Wells 1000 event, losing to Iga Swiatek in the final. She finished quarterfinalist at the 2024 Miami Open and semifinalist at the 2024 Charleston Open.

Maria Sakkari WTA Titles

Maria Sakkari has won two WTA titles in her career so far. Her first WTA title came in 2019 at the Morocco Open. She defeated the likes of Olga Danilovic, Alison Van Uytvanck, Elise Mertens, and Isabella Shinikova to reach the final. In the final, she defeated Johanna Konta 2-6, 6-4, 6-1.

Her second title came in 2023 at the Guadalajara Open, where she defeated American Caroline Dolehide in the final. It was her first WTA 1000 title, and she became the first Greek women's tennis player to win a WTA 1000 title.
