John Tavares is a forward and alternate captain for the Toronto Maple Leafs as of April 2025. He was selected by the New York Islanders (first overall) in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft and spent nine seasons with them, including five as captain.

Before joining the NHL, Tavares played in the OHL for the Oshawa Generals and London Knights. He was granted exceptional player status at age 14 and was the first pick in the 2005 OHL Draft. He won the CHL Rookie of the Year in 2006 and Player of the Year in 2007. Tavares was a top-ranked prospect ahead of the 2009 draft.
