The Conn Smythe Trophy is awarded annually to the most valuable player of his team in the Stanley Cup Playoffs. It was first awarded in 1964–65 and is named after Conn Smythe, former coach, manager, and owner of the Toronto Maple Leafs. The trophy was donated by Maple Leaf Gardens Limited, and winners are chosen by a panel of the Professional Hockey Writers Association at the end of the playoffs.
In 2023–24, Edmonton Oilers captain Connor McDavid won the Conn Smythe Trophy after scoring 42 points (eight goals, 34 assists) in 25 games. He broke Wayne Gretzky’s playoff assist record and became only the third player in NHL history to record over 40 points in a single postseason. Despite the Oilers losing in the Stanley Cup Final, McDavid was named MVP, becoming just the second skater to win the trophy without winning the Cup.
Conn Smythe Trophy Winner List
In 2024, Connor McDavid won the Conn Smythe Trophy with the Edmonton Oilers, his first time. Jonathan Marchessault (2023), Cale Makar (2022), and Andrei Vasilevskiy (2021) were recent winners, each earning their first. Sidney Crosby won it twice, in 2016 and 2017, with Pittsburgh.
Patrick Roy won it three times, the most ever—1986 and 1993 with Montreal and 2001 with Colorado. Wayne Gretzky (1985, 1988), Mario Lemieux (1991, 1992), and Bernie Parent (1974, 1975) each won it twice. The award includes winners from both championship and losing teams, such as Ron Hextall in 1987 and Jean-Sebastien Giguere in 2003.
