Sebastian Aho is the alternate captain for the Carolina Hurricanes in the NHL as of 2025. He began his professional career with Oulun Kärpät in Finland's SM-liiga during the 2013-14 season. Aho gained attention for his contribution to Kärpät's 2015 championship, where he scored the game-winning goal in overtime of Game 7.

Drafted 35th overall in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft by the Hurricanes, Aho made his NHL debut during the 2016-17 season. He represented Finland at the 2018 IIHF World Championship after the Hurricanes missed the playoffs that season. Aho was named the best forward at the 2018 IIHF World Championships. He has earned several awards, including appearances in the NHL All-Star Game (2019, 2022, 2024).

Sebastian Aho plays for the Carolina Hurricanes in the NHL. He was drafted by the Hurricanes in the second round (35th overall) of the 2015 NHL Draft. He joined Carolina in the 2016–17 season.

Aho finished his rookie NHL season (2016–17) with 49 points (24 goals, 25 assists). In the 2018–19 season, he started with an assist in 12 straight games, joining Wayne Gretzky and Ken Linseman as the only players in NHL history to do that. During that streak, he also broke Ron Francis' record for the longest season-opening point streak in Hurricanes/Whalers history.

Aho had 83 points in 2018–19 and made his first NHL All-Star Game appearance. He helped Carolina reach the 2019 Eastern Conference Final with 12 points in 15 playoff games. In the 2022–23 season, Aho led the Hurricanes in goals (36), shorthanded goals (3), shorthanded points (4), and game-winning goals (9). He reached at least 60 points for the fifth time. He scored his 20th career playoff goal to pass Eric Staal for the most in franchise history.

In 2023–24, Aho had 89 points (36 goals, 53 assists) in 78 games and 12 points (4 goals, 8 assists) in 11 playoff games. He became the third player in NHL history, after Wayne Gretzky and Mario Lemieux, to lead his team in playoff scoring in each of his first six postseasons. He was also one of the first six players selected for Finland at the 2025 4 Nations Face-Off.

Sebastian Aho's previous teams

Sebastian Aho has only played with the Carolina Hurricanes in his NHL career. Before playing with them, he played for Kärpät in Finland at several youth and senior levels before joining the NHL. In U16 SM-sarja (2011–12), he scored 58 points in 28 games and added 11 points in 8 playoff games. In U18 SM-sarja (2012–13), he had 60 points in 38 games. In U20 SM-liiga (2013–14), he had 59 points in 44 games and 12 points in 12 playoff games.

He debuted in Finland’s top league, Liiga, with Kärpät in 2013–14 (3 games, 1 assist). In 2014–15, he played 27 Liiga games for Kärpät (11 points) and 3 games on loan with Ässät (2 points). In 2015–16, Aho had 45 points in 45 Liiga games and 15 points in 14 playoff games for Kärpät.
