The Washington Capitals are an NHL team based in Washington, D.C. They compete in the Metropolitan Division of the Eastern Conference and were founded in 1974 alongside the Kansas City Scouts.

The Capitals have won 13 Divisional Championships, three Presidents' Trophies, two Conference Championships, and their first Stanley Cup in 2018. They play home games at Capital One Arena, which they share with the NBA's Washington Wizards. The team is affiliated with the Hershey Bears (AHL) and South Carolina Stingrays (ECHL).

The Washington Capitals won their first and only Stanley Cup on June 7, 2018. They defeated the Vegas Golden Knights 4–3 in Game 5 to win the series 4–1. Lars Eller scored the Cup-winning goal, and Alex Ovechkin was named playoff MVP. This victory ended a 44-year championship drought since the team's founding in 1974, as per The Guardian.
