The Australian Open is the largest annual sporting event in the Southern Hemisphere, held
annually over the last fortnight of January in Melbourne, Australia. Holding the record for the
highest attendance at a Grand Slam event in 2018, the Australian Open precedes the French
Open, Wimbledon and the US Open, featuring men’s and women’s singles, men’s, women’s
and mixed doubles, and juniors championships, while also including wheelchair, legends and exhibition events.
Originally known as the Australasian championship, the tournament was created in 1905 and
played on the hardcourts at Melbourne park, in Melbourne, Australia. The event was not held
from 1916 to 1918 and 1941 to 1945 due to world war Ⅰ and Ⅱ. The move to Melbourne
park from grass court to blue grass court in 1988 brought incredible results as the attendance
jumped 90% immediately.
The Australian Open has always been held in January, but due to a shift in Australian Open
draw and the subsequent tournament in December 1977 was the only year when the event
was held twice in one calendar.
The central court and the main stadium at Melbourne park are named after Rod Laver,
eleven time Grand slam champion, who is regarded as one of the greatest player in the history of sports.
The first Grand Slam of the year, the Australian Open 2021 is scheduled from January 18 to 31 at Melbourne park in Melbourne, Australia and it is the 109th edition of Australian Open.
Australian Open 2021 is the second edition of the tournament with GreenSet, a third type of hard surface from company GreenSet worldwide.
