Maninder, Gurcharan qualify from Chandigarh Leg of MercedesTrophy

Chandigarh, Feb 22 (PTI) City Golfer Maninder Pal Singh handicap category (0-16) and Jalandar golfer Gurcharan Cheema handicap category (17-24) qualified for the National Finals of MercedesTrophy on day 2 of the Chandigarh leg qualifier at the Panchkula Golf Course here today.

Maninder and Gurcharan clinched the two qualification spots available on the day by carding a nett. score of 73 and 73.6 respectively.

The MercedesTrophy has so far seen 29 qualifiers who will be competing in the National Finals to be played at the Oxford Golf Resort in Pune from April 4-6.

Winner of CAT A Maninder Pal Singh said, “I am very excited to be adjudged the winner and this will be my first ever MercedesTrophy final and I am really looking forward to it.”

Winner of CAT B Gurcharan Cheema said, “I have played in Canada and now I am playing golf here. Today I believe was my lucky day when everything seemed to fall in place and I believe I got lucky also on certain occasions. This will be my first final as well like my fellow winner.”

The best Gross Winner of the day was Aman Bajwa with a round of 72 and there were a host of other prizes on offer to be won on the day.

Prominent winners included Aditya Thapar who won the Ballantine’s Long Drive Challenge with a mammoth drive of 295 yards. Ashok Sharma won the Mercedes-Benz Closest to Pin contest on hole no. 17 by landing the ball at 10.8 feet from the pin.

In the Mercedes – Benz Closest to Pin in Two Shots, Taranvir Guron landed the ball at 8.8 ft. from the pin to win the contest on hole no. 1. Amrik Singh won the Mercedes-Benz Straightest Drive contest on hole no.10.

The format of play was Double Peoria. This unique format of adjusting handicaps of players levels the playing field enabling golfers to have a greater chance of qualifying for the National Finals.

A total of 112 city golfers participated on Day 2 of the Chandigarh leg qualifiers and Day 3 will feature 103 golfers who will play for two qualification spots tomorrow
