Coyle was drafted by the San Jose Sharks in 2010 and was traded to the Minnesota Wild in 2011. He made his NHL debut representing Minnesota in 2013. In February 2019, he was traded to the Boston Bruins.
Coyle helped the Bruins to the Stanley Cup Final in 2019. The same year, he signed a $31.5 million six-year contract extension. In March 2025, he was traded to the Colorado Avalanche.
