Elias Salomonsson, born on August 31, 2004, is a Swedish professional ice hockey defenseman, playing for the Manitoba Moose in the American Hockey League as of 2025. He is a prospect under contract with the Winnipeg Jets of the National Hockey League.

Born in Skelleftea, Sweden, Salomonsson developed his talent in the youth ranks of Skelleftea AIK, making his professional debut in the Swedish Hockey League. His impressive performances earned him selection by the Winnipeg Jets in the second round, 55th overall, of the 2022 NHL Entry Draft. Shortly after, he signed a three-year entry-level contract with the Jets. Internationally, Salomonsson has represented Sweden, winning gold at the 2022 World U18 Championships and silver at the 2024 World Junior Championships. He also participated in Skelleftea AIK’s 2024 SHL championship victory.

Elias Salomonsson's early days

Elias Salomonsson began his hockey journey in the youth system of his hometown club, Skellefteå AIK. He started making a name for himself at the U16 level, he delivered strong performances, such as scoring 14 points (six goals, eight assists) in 19 games during the 2018-19 U16 Elit season as per Elite Sports.

As he progressed to the J18 and J20 levels, Salomonsson further honed his skills as a defenseman. By the 2020-21 season, he had already made his professional debut with Skelleftea AIK in the Swedish Hockey League (SHL) at just 16 years old.

Elias Salomonsson was drafted 55th overall in the second round of the 2022 NHL Draft. At the 2024 Jets training camp, Salomonsson made a strong case for himself, taking advantage of injuries to veteran defensemen Ville Heinola and Logan Stanley. Head coach Scott Arniel noted, as per Yahoo Sports:

“You can see the growth of the young man. He’s getting more and more comfortable each day. He’s a big prospect for us.”

Salomonsson’s calm behavior under pressure earned high praise from teammates as well. Defenseman Colin Miller said via Yahoo Sports:

“You can see the poise — he’s not panicking under pressure. That’s a big thing once you get to this level."

In 2024-25 with the Manitoba Moose, Salomonsson’s performances have been nothing short of remarkable. With 12 points (three goals, nine assists) in 17 games, he leads all Moose defensemen and rookies in goals, assists, and points-per-game (0.71). His contributions earned him a spot in the 2025 AHL All-Star Game, becoming just the second rookie defenseman in Moose history to achieve this honor as per Yahoo Sports.

As per Sportrac, Elias Salomonsson signed a three-year, $2.85 million entry-level contract with the Winnipeg Jets in 2022, including a $285,000 signing bonus. With an annual salary averaging $950,000. His cap hit started at $870,000 in 2022-23 and settled at $846,667 in subsequent years. The contract runs through the 2025-26 season, after which Salomonsson will become a restricted free agent.
