
The James Norris Memorial Trophy is awarded to the NHL’s best all-around defenseman each season. It was first awarded in 1953–54 in memory of James Norris, former owner-president of the Detroit Red Wings. Voting is conducted by members of the Professional Hockey Writers Association.
In 2023–24, Quinn Hughes of the Vancouver Canucks won the Norris Trophy. He became the first Canucks player and fourth U.S.-born defenseman to win the award. Hughes led all NHL defensemen with 92 points (17 goals, 75 assists) and received 172 of 194 first-place votes. He ranked among leaders in power-play assists (1st; 33), plus/minus (+38), and total time on ice (2,024:10).
