Thomas Wilson is a Canadian professional ice hockey player. He plays as a right winger and also serves as an alternate captain for the Washington Capitals in the National Hockey League (NHL), as of April 2025. He was a part of the Plymouth Whalers of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) before his selection in the 2012 NHL draft. However, Wilson faced injuries early in his junior hockey career but gained attention during the 2012 J. Ross Robertson Cup playoffs.

Joining the Capitals in the 2013 Stanley Cup playoffs, Wilson's aggressive play style drew attention, leading to fines and suspensions. Despite controversies, he played a key role in the Capitals' 2018 Stanley Cup championship. Wilson later changed his approach, which led to goal generation and set career highs in the 2018–19 NHL season. However, his performance faced criticism again in 2021 due to injuries caused to opponents, raising concerns about his role as a power forward and enforcer. Till 2025, he has earned two NHL All-Star Game appearances in 2022 and 2024.

Tom Wilson Teams’ History

Tom Wilson has played professionally for one NHL team, the Washington Capitals, as of April 2025.

After completing his major junior hockey season with the Plymouth Whalers, Wilson joined the Hershey Bears, the Capitals' AHL affiliate. He made his NHL debut on May 10, 2013, in the Eastern Conference quarterfinals against the New York Rangers. Despite early challenges, including a broken left skate blade in his second game, Wilson gained valuable experience in the 2013–14 NHL season, participating in 82 games.

During the 2015–16 season, Wilson found his place on the Capitals lineup, contributing more minutes and gaining prominence in penalty kill situations. The 2016–17 season marked a shift in focus towards scoring as he had signed a two-year contract in June 2016. Wilson's performance during the 2018 Stanley Cup playoffs, including a controversial hit resulting in a three-game suspension, played a key role in the Capitals' championship victory.

Following the Stanley Cup win, Wilson signed a six-year contract in July 2018. His aggressive playing style led to suspensions, notably a 20-game suspension in 2018, which was later reduced to 14 games. Wilson adjusted his approach, emphasizing point production over hits, achieving career highs in goals and points during the 2019–20 season. The subsequent seasons brought both on-ice success and controversies, including suspensions and debates over his playing style.

Wilson signed a 7-year, $45.5-million contract extension with the Capitals in August 2023, as per Spotrac. Notably, in his 700th career game on November 30, he scored his first career hat trick. Wilson's contributions secured his spot in the 2024 NHL All-Star Game, showcasing his talents with Team MacKinnon. As of 2025, he is all set to compete in the playoffs for the Washington Capitals.
