He belongs to a nuclear family including his parents, Thomas Dedmon, and Gail Lewis, with his two elder sisters, Sabrina, and Marina. He lost his father at the age of three years as his father committed suicide. His mother is a devout Jehovah’s Witness. Dedmon grew up in an adverse environment surrounded by poverty. Despite this, he had an interest in basketball at a young age. He spent a lot of time on the basketball court practising basketball. After being transferred to the University of Southern California (USC), he affected the USC basketball team, averaging 6.7 points, 7 rebounds, and 2.1 blocks per game in his senior year. This game made him very popular and got him a spot on the All-Pac-12 Defensive Team.

The injury forced him to miss the final seven regular games, and he finally returned to the ground and scored 5 points and 13 rebounds and won against Miramar College in February.


For his higher education, he enrolled in the University of Southern California and completed his first semester at Antelope Valley but he was unable to play for the Marauders as he had to keep three full seasons of eligibility. He practiced with USC during his second semester of 2010-11.

During this time, Dedmon faced many injuries that affected his development but he still managed to average 7.6 points and 5.5 rebounds in 20 games. During his college career, he went on playing with distinct teams and had good scores in most of the games, and on April 24, 2013, he declared for the NBA draft.
