Matt Hughes is widely regarded as one of the GOATs of MMA. While his recent actions off the octagon have been questionable, his UFC career is something that will be celebrated forever. Hughes was a two - time UFC welterweight champion with a whopping five successful defences during his first reign and two during his second reign.

His bout with Frank Trigg for the welterweight title is considered a classic. UFC president, Dana White certainly thinks that the bout was the greatest he’s ever been to -

"Tons of trash-talk and back and forth between these two to the point where in the face-off, Trigg walks out and literally touches Matt's face with his face. And Hughes pushes him backwards."

"The greatest fight I have ever seen, ever been to. It was my favourite fight ever."

In his illustrious career, he’s had wins over BJ Penn, GSP, Matt Serra and Royce Gracie to name a few. Not bad for someone who was criticized for being a one - dimensional fighter.

In 2017, four years after his retirement from the octagon, Hughes’ life changed for the worse. He suffered a serious head injury as his truck collided with a train at a rail crossing. A couple of days later, Hughes’ family shared the following update -

“Matt is stable and has no broken bones or internal injuries. He has some minor lacerations and bruising and is currently being weaned from his ventilator. He is not yet awake and not responding as we would like to see but we see the fight in him”

Matt made it through and made his public appearances at a UFC event in January 2018 as a guest of honour.
