Born on August 18 1986, Miesha Tate is an American mixed martial artist. Raised in Tacoma, Washington, Tate started her fighting career by participating in amateur wrestling at Franklin Pierce High School. In an interview with Sherdog, she recalls her early days when she didn’t mind competing with boys -

“I got my butt kicked pretty hard for the first few weeks. I had no idea what I was doing, like a fish out of water,” she recalls. “I think the first part of the season, the coaches and guys speculated that I wasn’t there to stay: ‘She’ll quit. She can’t hang. Let’s make it hard on her, so she’ll want to leave.’ That was only more motivating. I guess I’ve always loved a challenge. My friends were mostly boys. We’d climb trees, make up games and I kind of had that mentality. It didn’t bother me to get roughed up by the guys. I was used to it.”

Tate made her professional MMA debut in 2007 at HOOKnSHOOT Women’s Grand Prix. She was then called up and signed by Strikeforce in 2008. In her five year stint at the promotion, she became the bantamweight champion and had memorable bouts with Hitomi Akano, Ronda Rousey and Julie Kedzie.

In 2013, Tate was signed by the UFC. Having said that women will never fight in the UFC, president Dana White credited the fight between Tate and Rousey to change his opinion. Tate ended up winning the UFC bantamweight championship by defeating Holly Holms at UFC 196.

While her name will always be attached to Rousey, it is no doubt that she is one of the pioneers of WMMA.
