Stone’s regular-season debut came on March 6, 2013, and he scored his first NHL goal on January 4, 2014. In the 2014–15 season, Stone secured a spot in the Senators' top-six forwards, finishing the season tied for the rookie scoring lead with 64 points. Despite a fractured wrist in the playoffs, Stone's performance earned him a Calder Memorial Trophy nomination.

He then joined the Vegas Golden Knights through a trade with the Ottawa Senators on Feb. 25, 2019. Appointed as the first captain in Golden Knights history on Jan. 13, 2021. In Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Final, he secured a hat trick, contributing to the 9-3 victory against the Florida Panthers.
