
The Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy honors the NHL player who shows perseverance, sportsmanship, and dedication to hockey. First awarded in 1967–68, it is named after Bill Masterton, who died from an on-ice injury in 1968.
In 2023–24, Arizona Coyotes goalie Connor Ingram won the award. He overcame OCD and depression after entering the NHL/NHLPA Player Assistance Program in 2021. Ingram became Arizona’s top goalie, going 23–21–3 with a 2.91 GAA, .907 save percentage, and an NHL-best (tie) six shutouts in 50 games. He has openly shared his mental health journey to inspire others.

From 1967–68 to 2023–24, Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy winners have included players who overcame life-threatening illnesses, serious injuries, and personal tragedies. In recent years, Connor Ingram (2023–24) overcame mental health struggles to lead in shutouts; Kris Letang (2022–23) returned soon after a stroke; Carey Price (2021–22) sought substance abuse treatment; and Oskar Lindblom (2020–21) beat cancer to return to full play.
Earlier winners like Mario Lemieux (1992–93) returned from Hodgkin’s lymphoma to win the scoring title, and Saku Koivu (2001–02) also came back from lymphoma. Other stories include overcoming strokes, cancer, severe injuries, and addiction, showing each player's deep resilience and love for the game.
