The Madrid Open is a joint men's and women's tennis tournament that takes place in Madrid every year in the month of May. This tournament is classified as an ATP Masters 1000 event on the ATP tour and as a Premier Mandatory event on the WTA tour.
The event is also popularly known as the Madrid Masters or Masters de Madrid or Mutua (Madrileña) Madrid Open in Spanish which is because of its sponsors Mutua Madrileña.
This tournament used to be played at the Madrid Arena from 2002 to 2008 as back then it was a hardcourt tournament. But the event transitioned to clay in 2009, the current venue of the Madrid Open is the Caja Magica.
A total amount of €3,226,325 has been announced for the 2021 edition of the Madrid Open.
In 2019, Novak Djokovic beat Stefanos Tsitsipas in the singles final 6-3, 6-4, while the pair of Jean-Julien Rojer and Horia Tecau defeated Dominic Thiem and Diego Schwartzman 6-2, 6-3 to clinch the title in the doubles category.
Kiki Bertens managed to defeat Simona Halep 6-4, 6-4 to take home the women's singles trophy. Meanwhile, the pair of Hsieh Su-wei and Barbora Strycova beat Gabriela Dabrowski and Xu Yifan in the women's doubles event.
Players to watch out for
Some of the world's top players will be participating in the tournament this year. Those include Novak Djokovic (Serbia), Rafael Nadal (Spain), Alexander Zverev (Germany), Dominic Thiem (Austria), Stefanos Tsitsipas (Greece), Daniil Medvedev (Russia) and Andrey Rublev (Russia).
