Early days

With a bunch of cricketers in the family, Ben the right stuff in his gene pool to embrace cricket. His first class debut came in 2010 at the age of 18, playing for Central Districts in Plunket Shield, New Zealand’s domestic first-class championship.

He began his international career playing in the Under-19 Indoor Cricket World Cup and was included for the ICC Under-19 World Cup in 2010. Wheeler had to wait for 4four years and more than a 100 wickets before selectors noticed his potential.

Debut

Ben Wheeler’s debut came with a bit of luck, when he was called to replace an injured Trent Boult in New Zealand’s tour of England in 2015. Wheeler scalped 3 wickets but was expensive as he gave away 63 runs in his debut ODI.

But his performance was good enough for a chance in two ODIs against Zimbabwe and South Africa in the same year. However, he did not live up to the expectations and was left out for New Zealand’s World Cup squad.

Wheeler made his debut in T20 cricket in the year 2017 against Bangladesh. Wheeler scooped up two wickets, including the important one of Tamim Iqbal in 4 overs while giving away only 22 runs.

Rise to glory

Ben wheeler shone into prominence soon after his first class debut. He took 26 wickets in his first 10 matches, averaging 29.26. He showed sound composure and confidence from the very beginning, something that is not expected from an eighteen year old.

Wheeler quickly got into the leading bowler’s shoes and was opening the attack for his team, Central Districts. Some match winning performances, which included a nine wicket haul against Wellington in 2011, further strengthened his stronghold.

Low points

After a promising start to his international career against England and South Africa, Wheeler’s run came to a halt when he suffered from the dreaded back stress fracture. He did not pick up the ball for 4 months and was out for the whole 2015-16 domestic season.

However, he was back on his feet when he was called for the T20 tour against Bangladesh, where he made his debut.
