Kyrie Andrew Irving is an American professional basketball player in the NBA who plays for the Brooklyn Nets. He is most popularly known for his crafty ball handling skills and is considered the best ball handler to ever play the game of basketball. Quite the polarising figure in the NBA, he is often scrutinised for his beliefs off the court.
Kyrie was born on the 23rd of March 1992 in Melbourne, Australia. Due to this reason he holds dual citizenship with the United States and Australia. He went to high school at Montclair Kimberley Academy and later transferred to St. Patrick’s High School, both in New Jersey. He went on to join the Duke Blue Devils to play college basketball for one season after which he declared for the 2011 NBA Draft.
The Cleveland Cavaliers selected Kyrie Irving with the first overall pick in the 2011 NBA draft. He swiftly paid the franchise’s faith back by winning Rookie of The Year, which would be the first major honour of his spell at the Cavaliers.
The homecoming of Lebron James and the trade for Kevin Love immediately propelled the Cavs to the status of championship contenders which they fulfilled in 2016 after a hard fought battle with the Warriors. Kyrie hit the most important shot of the franchise’s history in game seven of the 2016 finals. After the 2017 loss to the Warriors in the finals, Kyrie demanded a trade. He was traded to the Boston Celtics where he did not have the impact he was hoping to have. In 2019, he teamed up with Kevin Durant in Brooklyn during the 2019 free agency period. With James Harden joining the team in 2020 there was a lot of hype going into the season. The Nets lost to the eventual champions due to Kyrie getting injured. He ended the season having joined the 50-40-90 club.
He won gold medals with the USA Men's Basketball Team during the 2016 Rio Olympics and the 2014 FIBA World Cup where he won the tournament’s MVP in the latter.
