One of the four major tennis events, the French Open, or the Roland Garros, is considered to be the toughest of all the majors. It is an annual event that was established in 1891, and was then known as the French Championship. Initially, the tournament was played on grass courts in 1891, which changed to sand in 1892–1907. It finally became the red clay surface of the French Open we know today in 1908.
Rafael Nadal holds the record for most titles at Roland Garros, with 14 French Opens. Having won five straight from 2010 to 2014, he also holds the record for the most consecutive victories in the Open Era. At 37 years old, Novak Djokovic, former world No. 1, became the oldest Open Era champion when he won the French Open in 2023.
