Greg Monroe: A Brief Biography

Gregory Keith Monroe Jr. is an American professional basketball player and a member of the Toronto Raptors of the National Basketball Association (NBA). Monroe played his high school basketball for Helen Cox High School in Harvey, Louisiana. In his senior year in 2007-08, Monroe averaged 21.0 points and 14.0 rebounds per game. He was named McDonald's All-American and earned Parade All-America first team honors.

After graduating from school, Monroe decided to attend Georgetown. In his freshman year, he averaged 12.7 points, 6.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists, 1.8 steals, and 1.5 blocks in 30.9 minutes per game and was named the Big East Rookie of the Year, Big East All-Rookie team and All-American first team honors.

In his sophomore year, Monroe averaged 16.1 points, 9.6 rebounds, 3.8 assists, 1.2 steals and 1.5 blocks in 34.2 minutes in 34 games. He was named All-Big East first team, Big East All-Tournament team, NABC Division I All-America third team, USBWA All-District II team, NABC Division I All-District 5 first team and AP NCAA All-America third team.

Monroe was drafted as the 7th overall pick in the 2010 NBA Draft by the Detroit Pistons. Despite a slow start to his rookie season, Monroe’s playing minutes increased in 2011 due to solid scoring and rebounding for the Pistons. In the 2013-14 season, Monroe joined Grant Hill as the only other Piston player to record his third consecutive season with 1,000-plus points and 600-plus rebounds.

In 2015, Monroe signed a three-year, $50 million contract with the Milwaukee Bucks. In 2017, he was traded to the Phoenix Suns, along with the rights to a protected future first-round pick and a 2018 protected second-round pick, in exchange for Eric Bledsoe. Mid-way through the 2017-18 season, Monroe signed with the Boston Celtics. In a game against the Chicago Bulls, Monroe came off the bench to record 19 points, 11 rebounds, and 10 assists, becoming the first center since Robert Parish to score a triple-double. In 2018, he signed a deal with the Toronto Raptors.
