His breakthrough came on February 10, 2023, when he earned his first career start following Mason Plumlee's trade.

Williams' performance continued into the 2023-24 season, where he set a Hornets record with 15 offensive rebounds in a single game against the Washington Wizards on November 10, 2023. In that same game, he posted a stat line of 21 points and 24 total rebounds. Although his second season was shortened due to a back injury sustained against the Brooklyn Nets, Williams still managed to improve his statistics, averaging 12.7 points, 9.7 rebounds, and 1.1 blocks per game. At Norfolk Academy, Williams achieved a milestone by surpassing 1,000 career points in February 2019, leading to his selection for the USA Today All-USA Virginia Boys Basketball second team. For his senior year, Williams transferred to the nationally renowned IMG Academy. His performance in high school basketball culminated in his selection as a 2020 McDonald's All-American, one of the highest honors for high school basketball players in the United States.
