Rui Hachimura : A Brief Biography

Rui Hachimura is a Japanese professional Basketball player playing for the Washington Wizards.He is the 2nd Japanese born player to ever be drafted in the NBA. He is also a part of the Japanese national basketball team. He was the 9th pick by the Washington Wizards in the 2019 NBA Draft and was selected to the All-Rookie 2nd team of the 2019-20 season.


Born in Toyama Prefecture, Hachimura first gained popularity when he achieved success at the youth level in Japan. He played for Meisei High School and won three straight titles at the All-Japan High School Tournament. With that he was also widely regarded as the best player in the Japanese under-17 and under-19 national teams during FIBA competitions.


He played for Gonzaga and is only the 5th Japaneseto play in the NCAA and in 2017 became the first Japanese national to play in the NCAA Division I men's tournament. He shined in his sophomore season, earning first-team All-WCC honors. He also earned a spot as the finalist for the Naismith Player of the Year award.


With foriegn forces making up a major part of the league. Rui Hachimura has a bright future ahead of him. He can play both as a power forward and small forward, while also being very versatile on the wings.
