Mike Conley: A Brief Biography

Mike Alex Conley Jr. is an American professional basketball player who plays as a point guard for the Minnesota Timberwolves in the NBA. He is currently playing his 15th season, out of which he has played 12 seasons with the Grizzlies and was the all time leading scorer for his team. He was selected by the Memphis Grizzlies as the fourth overall choice in the 2007 NBA Draft. He is the son of Mike Conley Sr., an Olympic gold and silver medalist in the triple jump.He was an NBA All-star in 2021.

Early Life


Conley grew up in Fayetteville and went to the Lawrence North High School in Indianapolis, Indiana, where he learned basketball and eventually excelled in it. During his high school career, he helped lead his team to three state championships and was named an Indiana All-Star in his senior year.


After graduating from high school, He played college basketball for Ohio State, where he played basketball for one year before declaring for the NBA draft. He was selected by the Memphis Grizzlies in the 2007 NBA draft. He ended his college season with a total of 441 points and 238 assists, earning him a spot on the All-Big Ten First Team. He also helped Ohio State to lead in the national championship game and was named to the All-Final Four team.

Conley finished his rookie year averaging 9.4 points and 4.2 assists per game. He started his sophomore campaign competing with Kyle Lowry for minutes, On February 19, 2009, Lowry was traded to the Houston Rockets, which allowed Conley to move into the starting lineup. He averaged 10.8 points and 4.3 assists per game on the year.


Conley became the starting point guard for the Grizzlies in 2009. He scored a season-high 25 points on March 31, 2010, in the Grizzlies 102–106 loss to the Dallas Mavericks. He averaged 12.0 points and 5.3 assists in that season


Conley averaged 13.7 and 6.5 assists in the 2010-11 season to help the Grizzlies make the playoffs for the first time in five years, where they reached the conference semifinals after beating the 1st seed San Antonio Spurs in the 1st round.


In the 2012-13 season, Conley averaged 14.6 points, 6.1 assists and 2.8 rebounds per game as the Grizzlies reached the Western Conference Finals for the first time in franchise history. Conley was named to the NBA All-Defensive Second Team for the first time.


On October 31, 2015, Conley surpassed Shareef Abdur-Rahim (7,801) for third on the Grizzlies career scoring list. Since then, Conley's career has been plagued by injuries. He has also won the NBA Sportsmanship Award twice.

Mike Jr. is married to his longtime girlfriend Mary Peluso Conley, and the couple has two children together, Myles and Marley.
