Leylah Annie Fernandez, who goes by Leylah Fernandez, was born in Montreal, Quebec, on September 6, 2002. Her father Jorge is from Ecuador, while her mother Irene is a Filipino Canadian. Her younger sister Bianca is also a tennis player. Leylah is the second child of Leylah's parents, who support their girls' interest in pursuing a career in sports.

The young spirit started playing tennis at the age of five and began competing when she was 10. Apart from tennis, Fernandez had a penchant for other sports too, participating in track and field, football, and volleyball.
