Strycova advanaces in Bienne, Gorges through to round two
Barbora Strycova lost her way in Bienne, but recovered to avoid a surprise first-round exit against Marie Bouzkova.
Top seed Barbora Strycova overcame a wobble to reach the second round of the Ladies Open Biel Bienne by beating Marie Bouzkova on Tuesday.
Strycova lost the first two games of the final set after letting the second set slip, but recovered to prevail 6-2 4-6 6-2 against the qualifier in Bienne.
The world number 18 will take on Carina Witthoft in round two after breaking seven times and hitting 25 winners in a contest which swung one way and the other before the favourite came out on top.
Strycova also saved four break points to advance, having been broken on three occasions in the second.
Julia Gorges, the seventh seed from Germany, was also a first-round victor on day two of the hard-court tournament in Switzerland, where Naomi Broady went down 6-4 6-2.
Witthoft got the better of wildcard Belinda Bencic, who succumbed to a 6-1 6-3 defeat.
Qualifiers Marketa Vondrousova and Aliaksandra Sasnovich came through their matches against Lina Gjorcheska – the lucky loser standing in for Alize Cornet – and Pauline Parmentier respectively.
Camila Giorgi, Oceane Dodin, Evgeniya Rodina, Anett Kontaveit and Donna Vekic also march on.
