At the age of 16, Altidore made his professional debut in 2006 with the New York Red Bulls. In 2008, in the middle of his third season with New York, he transferred for a $10 million fee to Villarreal.


Altidore left Villarreal for three loan periods: from February to May 2009 with Spanish Segunda División club Xerez, the entire 2009–10 English Premier League season with Hull City, and a six-month loan with Turkish club Bursaspor.


He joined AZ Alkmaar in the Netherlands in the summer of 2011. With his 24th goal on March 3, 2013, Altidore passed Clint Dempsey for the most goals by an American in a European club season. Altidore was acquired by Sunderland in the 2013 summer transfer window, where he played for one and a half season before signing with Toronto FC in 2015.
