Gary Payton II: A Brief Biography

Gary Dwayne Payton ii is an American professional basketball player who plays as a Shooting guard for the Golden State Warriors in the NBA. He is currently playing his 5th season and has been an NBA Champion in 2022 with the Warriors. Hall of Famer Gary Payton is his father. In honor of his father's nickname, "the Glove," he is called "Young Glove." He and his dad were the fifth father-son duo to win an NBA championship. Payton II joined the Houston Rockets for the 2016 NBA Summer League after going undrafted in the 2016 NBA Draft.


Early life


He graduated in 2011 from Spring Valley High School, where he received medals in swimming and basketball for one year. For the 2011–12 academic year, he then enrolled at Westwind Preparatory Academy. He played two seasons for the Salt Lake Community College in Salt Lake City, Utah. As a freshman, he had a game average of 9.4 points, 6.2 rebounds, 3.7 assists, and 1.9 steals (2012–13) and led his team to win the Region 18 Championship and outright SWAC title in 2013. He was also named to the Second Team of the NJCAA Division I All-Americans in his sophomore season after averaging 14.1 points, 7.9 rebounds, 3.8 assists, and 1.9 steals per game.

Payton II was undrafted in the 2016 NBA Draft. Later on, he signed with the Milwaukee Bucks and in the debut game against the Denver Nuggets, he scored 5 points in nine minutes.


In 2018 he signed a two-way contract with the LA Lakers. Payton had a career-high 25 points and a career-high 12 rebounds against the Los Angeles Clippers in the season's final game. Then after playing for the Washington Wizards, and South bay Lakers, he was chosen by the Raptors 905 as the 15th overall pick in the first 2021 NBA G League draft where he scored an average of 10.8 points, 5.6 rebounds, 2.6 assists, and 2.54 steals per game thus, winning the NBA Defensive player of the award in the NBA G League in 2021.


On 16 May he signed with the Warriors for the remaining season and the next season also where he won his first NBA championship in 2021. Payton agreed to a three-year, $28 million contract with the Portland Trail Blazers on July 6, 2022. He was traded back to the Golden State Warriors in Feb. 2023.
