Philip Rivers: A Brief Biography

Philip Michael Rivers is a former long-time quarterback in the NFL who played for 17 years in the professional league. He spent nearly his entire tenure barring his last season with the San Diego / Los Angeles Chargers. In 2020, he spent his final season with the Indianapolis Colts leading them to the playoffs.

Rivers was an incredible signal-caller in the league and led his teams to the postseason on seven occasions from his 17 seasons. Unfortunately, Rivers could not replicate his regular season success into the playoffs and was never able to reach the Super Bowl. As a matter of fact, Rivers could lead his team to the AFC Championship game only on one occasion.

The 6 foot 5 inch former signal caller spent his first couple of seasons serving as the team's backup quarterback before taking over the offense from the 2006 NFL season onwards. By the time Rivers retired on January 20, 2021, he finished fifth in both overall passing yards as well as passing touchdowns. He is also second on the list of quarterbacks with the most consecutive regular season starts as he started every single game from 2006 to 2020 which is an astonishing record. Rivers is one of the rare quarterbacks who has a long history in the NFL but one who never won a Championship ring.

Philip Rivers Early Life

Rivers was born on December 8, 1981, in Decatur, Alabama. He had aspirations to one day play in the NFL since he was a little kid. At one point during fifth grade, he was asked to make a school project about his dreams and what he would like to do when he grew up. Rivers at the time, took a Minnesota Viking player’s cutout from a Sports Illustrated cover and placed his photo over it.

He attended Athens High School where he played quarterback for their football team and quickly became a great player at the position. While he had some lucrative offers from Universities such as Auburn and Alabama, he was not seen as their starter and therefore he turned down those offers. Instead, Rivers attended North Carolina State University and went on to have an exceptional four-year college career.

By the time his college football career was over, he had nearly all of the University’s records on his name. Leading the Wolfpack football team to a bowl game in each of these four seasons, his team would come out as winners in three of those four years. He finished his college career with over 13,400 passing yards and threw 95 touchdowns to just 34 interceptions.

Philip Rivers Personal Life

Philip Rivers was born to Steve and Joan Rivers in Decatur, Alabama. He is happily married to Tiffany Rivers with whom he shares nine children. He is a very devoted family man and spends as much time with his wife and children doing various activities. Post retirement, he has taken up football coaching to keep himself busy.

Philip Rivers Family Background

Not much is known about the family background of Philip Rivers. He was born to parents Steve and Joan Rivers. His father was into the game of American football which demonstrates the love that Philip himself has for the game. In fact, not only did his father also play collegiate football, but he was also the head coach for the Athen High School football team where he got the chance to coach his son. River’s mother on the other hand was a teacher.

The former Chargers’ quarterback also has a younger brother named Stephen and a sister named Anna. There is not much information about both of them and the age of his sister is also unknown. Stephen, however, is approximately 11 years younger than his famous brother and he too had ambitions of playing in the NFL one day. Unfortunately for him, he was unable to make his mark on the game in college and thus was never drafted.

Philip Rivers Wife

The iconic former quarterback met his wife, Tiffany, when they were both in the same high school. The two connected instantly and shared similar values and beliefs. As a result of which it did not take long for them to make things official. The lovely couple got married in 2001 while they were still in college and even welcomed their first child, a daughter named Halle on July 6, 2002, at just 19 and 20 years old.

In college, while Philip concentrated on his football, Tiffany continued her studies and also worked a job with children. She converted to a Catholic just prior to their wedding and has helped keep Rivers’ faith in God. Even to this day, the gorgeous couple are happily married and enjoying life to the fullest.

Tiffany later went on to become a swimwear designer and co-founded a swimwear line with Marisa De Lecce called Hermoz. Their goal was to create something that was not overly expensive and easily wearable without sexualizing it. Tiffany is also a philanthropist and started the Rivers of Hope Foundation which aimed at finding homes for orphaned and foster care children. Although the organization came to a close in 2013, the Rivers have continued to support such children by broadening their scope.

Since 2019, Tiffany has also ventured into raising money for research on Diabetes. This venture is more personal to the family as their son Gunner is a type-1 diabetic and has to take injections anytime he eats food with carbs in it.

Philip Rivers Kids

Philip and his wife Tiffany are parents to nine beautiful children. Together, the lovely pair already have seven girls and two boys and have recently announced that they are expecting their tenth child soon.

Tiffany first gave birth to a daughter named Halle, in 2002 just a year after she got married to Philip. At the time both of them were still in college. Both of them have been extremely loving as parents and they love to take care of such a big family.

The Alabama natives' kids are Halle (21), Caroline (18), Grace (17), Gunner (15), Sarah (13), Peter (12), Rebecca (9), Clare (7), Anna (4) and the newest addition to the family will be their third boy as per reports. As of now in 2023, Halle, the oldest, is 21 years old and already an adult herself. The Rivers have had most of their kids after a two-year age gap but the tenth child will be the first time they have had this big of a gap as their ninth child was born in 2019.

It goes without saying that all kids and the entire family share a special bond. Most importantly though, is that even when the former quarterback used to be playing in the NFL, he ensured to spend as much quality time as he could with his children when he was home.

Philip Rivers Social Media

Philip Rivers seems to be very private when it comes to his social status. Although he is a big-time celebrity and a famous former NFL player, he does not have much if at all any presence on social media. No official social media handles could be found in connection to his name.

Being a devout catholic, and raised as a wonderful individual, Rivers has gone above and beyond to ensure he remains a through and through family man. He has been a loving and caring husband as well as a father which is a testament to the fact that he shares a strong bond with his large family. Thus, it is safe to say that his family life is much more important to him than his social status.

Philip Rivers Draft

Philip Rivers was part of the 2004 NFL Draft which was a hugely popular draft for the quarterbacks. In spite of his tremendous success in high school and college, certain general managers and teams had reservations about picking him as they felt he had a lack of arm strength and his throwing motion was unorthodox. Yet, Rivers was still expected to be drafted in the first round.

Rivers was selected as the number four overall pick by the New York Giants but was immediately dealt to the then San Diego Chargers (Los Angeles Chargers) franchise in a move that stirred up quite a bit of controversy although it had nothing to do with Rivers. The Chargers had the first overall pick and they selected Eli Manning, another former great NFL quarterback, however, it came to light that Eli didn’t want to play with the Chargers at the time and it eventually resulted in a trade with the Giants.

Even so, some of the other notable players from this draft include another former great quarterback, Ben Roethlisberger who spent his entire 18-year career with the Pittsburgh Steelers and guided them to two Super Bowl wins. Larry Fitzgerald, the legendary wide receiver and cornerback DeAngelo Hall were also part of this draft class.

Philip Rivers NFL Journey

Rivers has had a truly amazing journey in the NFL. He played a long career that spanned 17 seasons and gave it his all on the football field. Of course, as is the case with every professional, his career had its fair share of ups and downs, but in hindsight, it was one that any player would have been proud of.

San Diego / Los Angeles Chargers (2004-2019)

Drafted in the first round by the San Diego Chargers, the former North Carolina State quarterback had to warm the bench for much of the first two seasons. He watched and learned valuable lessons as the Chargers QB1 at the time, Drew Brees, had a great 2004 season before once again missing the playoffs in 2005.

As the Chargers had invested a lot of money in Rivers and since Brees wanted a better contract than what they were offering, the Chargers opted to let him walk and made Rivers their new franchise quarterback. In his rookie year and the following year as a backup to Brees, Rivers only featured in two games each year with no notable performances.

As soon as Rivers took charge of the offense from the 2006 season, he led the team to four consecutive postseasons making the Conference Championship Round in 2007 where they lost 12-21 to the New England Patriots.

In the period between 2008 to 2011, Rivers had probably the best four seasons from a personal standpoint leading the league in passing yards in 2010 with 4,710. He also led the league in average passing yards for three consecutive seasons from 2008 to 2010. Unfortunately though, the Chargers either missed the playoffs in those seasons or went home early in the postseason.

From 2013 to 2019, Rivers put in consistently good performances thrown for over 4,000 yards every year. However, he and the Chargers could make it to the postseason in only two of those years but lost in the Divisional Round both times.

After the 2019 season wrapped up, the Chargers and Rivers mutually agreed to move on allowing him to become a free agent.

Indianapolis Colts (2020)

Prior to the commencement of the 2020 season, the Indianapolis Colts signed Rivers to a one-year deal worth $25 million. He started all 16 games and guided the Colts to the postseason but once again failed to progress to the latter stages as they lost in the Wild Card Round to the Buffalo Bills. That loss to the Bills would prove to be the last time Rivers played in the NFL as he announced his retirement from the game on January 20, 2021.

Philip Rivers Achievements

Having played for 17 long seasons in the NFL, Rivers has set a number of records and earned several accolades. Some of his most notable NFL records and awards include:

Philip Rivers Investments

There is no concrete information regarding any investments made by Philip Rivers.

Philip Rivers Diet

Towards the latter stages of his career, Rivers mentioned in an interview with ‘Muscle and Fitness’ that he started to follow a stricter diet as he got older. It was difficult for him to get away with eating everything that he used to earlier in his career.

The most important thing for Rivers was to avoid gluten as much as possible. Along with that, he would ensure to cut down on carbs after his lunch. He would have some after his morning workout session but it was almost strictly a no-no in the evenings.

On game days, Rivers had a habit of eating raisin toast before the game. He would also have some pasta, and then a filet to go along with the toast. Now that Rivers is retired, he has probably eased up on his diet just a tad.

Philip Rivers House

Philip Rivers and his family are currently living in Fairhope, Alabama, where he is coaching the St. Michaels Catholic High School’s football team. Although his current residence is unknown in Alabama, Rivers used to have homes in San Diego and Indianapolis during his playing days.

Rivers' former home in San Diego was built in 2005 and sat on more than one acre of land. Some of the house’s features include a saltwater swimming pool, a putting green, a lawn, as well as a playhouse. It was a single-story, 6,800-square-foot property consisting of 6 bedrooms and 6.5 bathrooms. This was the home where the Rivers family spent most of their time as he was with the organization for 16 years.

His home in Indianapolis was built in 2013 and also had five bedrooms and six bathrooms to accommodate his large family. The house was spread over 7,500 square feet. The interiors are a mix of wood and marble and have a more antique feel to it. Some features of this house include a wet bar, wine closet, large gym and projection theater system.

The kitchen boasts a large island, two laundry rooms, one on each floor, four fireplaces, tall ceilings, and more.

Philip Rivers Cars

Once again as Philip Rivers likes to keep his personal life private from the media, not much is known about his car collection. Back in 2017, however, it was reported that he completely customized an SUV when the Chargers relocated from San Diego to Los Angeles. While all his teammates also relocated, Rivers opted to stay back and thus had a long commute after home games.

For this, he decked up his SUV and fitted two large seats which one would normally find on a jet in the back. He also added a 40-inch screen, WiFi, satellite TV and a refrigerator. This way he could watch the game film and spend his commute time working so by the time he reached home he could spend some quality time with his family.
