Christian Wood: A Brief Biography

Christian Wood is an American professional basketball player. He was born on September 27, 1995. Currently, he is playing for the Dallas Mavericks in the National Basketball Association. Wood plays at the Power Forward position to help his side register victories. He started his professional basketball career in 2015 with a contract with the Philadelphia 76ers. Christian played college basketball for UNLV from 2013-15. He participated in 30 games as a freshman with two starts. Earlier, he attended Los Alamitos High School, Knight High School and Findlay. He assisted his side (the Pilots) in Findlay to win 54 games in a row. Since 2015, Christian Wood has played for several franchises in the NBA.

Early Life

Christian originally attended Los Alamitos High School. He spent his first year of high school here before moving to Knight High School in Palmdale, California. In Knight High School, he again spent one year before joining Finlay Prep in Henderson, Nevada. Wood started playing basketball during these years. He helped the Pilots win 54 matches consecutively in Findlay. Also, Wood supported his side to grab an ESPN High School Invitational championship in 2012.

Rivals listed Christian Marquise Wood as the No. 36 overall player in the class of 2013. Similarly, Scout and ESPN also assigned him the ranks of 10 and 71, respectively. After that, Christian attended UNLV to play college basketball from 2013 to 2015. He then moved to play professional basketball in the NBA from 2015 onwards.


NBA Journey


Christian Marquise Wood is one of the most successful basketball players in NBA history. He has represented many franchises in the professional league throughout his career. Before entering the professional NBA arena, he played at UNLV from 2013 to 2015. Wood participated in 30 games as a freshman and averaged 4.5 points and 3.2 rebounds per game. He registered 15.7 points, 2.7 blocks and 10 rebounds each game as a sophomore in 33 games. Wood then declared for the 2015 NBA draft after the season.


Philadelphia 76ers

Christian Wood started his NBA journey in 2015. Initially, he went undrafted in the 2015 NBA draft but joined the Houston Rockets to participate in the 2015 NBA Summer League. However, Wood signed a contract with the Philadelphia 76ers on September 27, 1995. It was also his birthday. Christian made his debut for the 76ers on October 28 with two rebounds in five minutes (off the bench) against the Boston Celtics. Wood underwent several assignments with the Delaware 87ers of the NBA Development League. The Philadelphia 76ers waived Wood in January 2016.


Delaware 87ers

Delaware 87ers signed Christian Wood on January 6, 2016. Wood rejoined the 76ers on March 4 with a 10-day contract with the franchise. However, he was unable to stretch his stint beyond the third day and the franchise terminated his services on March 7. Wood then rejoined the 87ers on March 9. On March 27, Wood again signed a 10-day contract with the 76ers but extended his tenure later for the rest of the season.


Charlotte Hornets

Christian Wood signed a contract with the Charlotte Hornets in July 2016. He marked his debut game for the side on November 7 in which the Hornets registered a 122-100 victory against the Indiana Pacers. Wood gained two rebounds in three minutes off the bench. Meanwhile, Wood observed several assignments with the Greensboro Swarm (NBA Development League) during his sophomore season.


Delaware 87ers

Christian Wood joined the Phoenix Suns and the Dallas Mavericks for the NBA Summer League 2017. He was a member of the Dallas Mavericks that clinched the title of the Summer League Championship in Orlando in 2017. Later in August 2017, Christian had a contract with the Fujian Sturgeons of the Chinese Basketball Association. He didn’t play even a single game for the side since the Sturgeons waived him and he returned to the 87ers the same year.


Milwaukee Bucks

Christian Wood signed a contract with the Milwaukee Bucks in August 2018. However, the franchise waived Wood on March 18, 2019.


New Orleans Pelicans

With the departure of Nikola Mirotic, Christian grabbed the opportunity to get substantial minutes for the first time in his career. He recorded 7 points in 8 minutes of playing time in his debut. Wood gained 23 points, 9 rebounds, 6 blocks, three steals and an assist in a game against the Hawks. The Pelicans lost the game, however. The franchise waived Christian on July 15, 2019.


Detroit Pistons

Detroit Pistons acquired Wood on July 17, 2019. He tested positive for COVID-19 which resulted in the subsequent suspension of the season.


Houston Rockets

Christian Wood was traded from the Pistons to the Houston Rockets under a three-year contract worth US$41 million. He played his debut game for the franchise that lost to the Portland Trail Blazers on December 26, 2020. Wood registered 13 rebounds, 13 points, three assists and one block in the match. On January 3, 2022, the Houston Rockets suspended Christian for a single game due to poor behavior.


Dallas Mavericks

Dallas Mavericks bought Wood on June 24, 2022, to replace Trey Burke, Boban Marjanovic and Sterling Brown. He also became the first player to score at least 25 points each in his first two games in the history of the franchise.
