Jordan Clarkson: A Brief Biography

Jordan Clarkson (born June 7, 1992) is a Filipino-American NBA basketball player who currently plays as a shooting guard for the Utah Jazz. He played basketball with Tulsa Golden Hurricane Men’s Basketball Team in college.


Jordan decided to forgo his senior year of college and enter the 2014 NBA draft. The Washington Wizards drafted him as the 46th overall pick in the second round. Soon he was traded to the Los Angeles Lakers and was selected to the NBA All-Rookie First Team. In 2021, he was rewarded as the NBA Sixth Man of the Year.

Jordan Clarkson was born on June 7, 1992, in Tampa, Florida, to his father, Mike Clarkson and mother, Annette Tullao Davis. Jordan’s family includes African-American roots from his father’s side and Filipina-American ancestry from his mother’s side.


Jordan’s parents served in the United States Airforce. His parents divorced when Jordan was young. Later, Mike Clarkson (Jordan’s father) remarried Janie Clarkson. Jordan was primarily raised by his single mother, Annette Davis. His family shifted to Texas when he was just six.


Jordan Clarkson’s Education

Jordan Clarkson attended Karen Wagner High School in San Antonio. Despite being just a sophomore, Jordan significantly impacted the basketball court, averaging 10 points per game and receiving honourable mention all-district honours. He guided his school team to the Class 5A state semi-finals and scored 20 points, six rebounds and four assists per game.


In November 2019, Jordan joined the University of Tulsa to play college basketball, where he was selected to the 2011 Conference USA All-Freshman team in his first year. Jordan averaged 11.5 points, 2.1 rebounds, and 1.9 assists in 27 games. During his second year with the team, he earned a spot on the All-Conference USA First team and was also recognised as part of the NABC All-District 11 team.


In May 2012, Jordan Clarkson joined the Missouri Tigers men’s basketball team, where he was selected to the 2014 All-SEC second team. Jordan won three Southeastern Conference Player of the Week awards during his gameplay with Missouri. He tallied 17.5 points, 3.8 rebounds, and 3.4 assists in 35 games. Later, in 2014, Jordan left his college and entered the 2014 NBA draft.

Los Angeles Lakers

Jordan Clarkson was selected as the 46th overall pick in the second round of the 2014 NBA draft. But he was immediately traded to the Los Angeles Lakers on August 25, 2014. He mainly played as a point guard in his first 38 games with the Lakers, averaging 15.8 points, 5.0 assists and 4.2 rebounds. During this season, he was selected to the NBA All-Rookie First Team. In November 2015, Jordan scored his career-high 30 points in a match against the Denver Nuggets.


On July 7, 2016, Jordan signed a four-year contract extension with the Los Angeles Lakers worth $50 million. During this season, he participated in many matches against various teams, including the Houston Rockets, Brooklyn Nets, Philadelphia 76ers, Minnesota Timberwolves, Phoenix Suns and the Indiana Pacers. In January 2018, he set new season highs by scoring 33 points in a 99-86 win over the Indiana Pacers.


Cleveland Cavaliers

Jordan Clarkson was traded to the Cleveland Cavaliers on February 8, 2018, in exchange for Isaiah Thomas and Channing Frye. He spent two full seasons playing for this team. Luckily, his team got a chance to play in the 2018 NBA Finals, but unfortunately, they lost four games to the Golden State Warriors. On February 13, 2019, Jordan recorded a career-high 42 points in a match over the Brooklyn Nets.


Utah Jazz

On December 24, 2019, the Utah Jazz acquired the rights of Jordan Clarkson by trading Dante Exum to his former team. Jordan signed a $52 million, four-year contract with the Utah Jazz on November 21, 2020. He averaged a career-high 18.4 points during the 2020-21 season and won the NBA Sixth Man of the Year Award.


On March 12, 2022, Jordan recorded his career-high 45 points in a 134-125 win over the Sacramento Kings. In December, he scored 39 points and eight rebounds in a victory over the New Orleans Pelicans.


Recently, on January 14, 2023, Jordan Clarkson put up an impressive 38 points and nine rebounds in a 118-117 loss to the Philadelphia 76ers. He is still playing for the Utah Jazz in the ongoing season.
