Leonard Cornilus Floyd is a professional American football defensive end for the San Francisco 49ers in the NFL. The Chicago Bears selected Floyd as the 9th overall pick in the first round of the 2016 NFL Draft. Floyd attended Dodge County High School in Georgia, where he began his football career. He recorded 182 tackles and 17.0 sacks in 38 games during his high school tenure. Due to his amazing performance, Floyd was selected to the 2011 Super Southeast 120 by the Mobile (Ala.) Register as a defensive end. Along with this, he also competed in the shot put in the 2011 GHSA Boys AA State Championships held in Athens. Floyd’s collegiate career began with the University of Georgia in 2013.
As a freshman in 2013, Floyd recorded 55 tackles and a team-leading 6.5 sacks while playing in 13 games. In 2014 as a sophomore, he recorded 6.0 sacks, forced three fumbles, and tallied 55 tackles. Due to his impressive performances, Floyd was awarded the Bulldogs' Defensive MVP in 2014 and received honorable mention all-conference honors from league media. Floyd’s junior year was his breakthrough year, where he recorded 72 tackles (35 solo), 4.5 sacks, and a fumble recovery returned for a 96-yard touchdown while playing in 13 games. Floyd was named to the All-SEC second team and finished his collegiate career ranked 11th all-time in school history with 17.0 sacks in 2015. He was also the 2015 Butkus Award finalist due to his defensive prowess.
