The Denver Nuggets are an American Basketball team competing in Western Conference Northwest Division of the NBA. The team was founded in 1967 and plays its home games at the Pepsi Center. Denver Nuggets are one of the seven teams to have not won a Championship or a Conference title.
The Denver Nuggets were part of the ABA from 1967 to 1976 and joined the NBA in 1977. The initial seasons in the NBA were very good for the Nuggets and they qualified for the Playoffs in each of their first three seasons in the NBA. The Nuggets have reached the Conference Finals thrice, with their last appearance coming in 2009 where they lost to the Lakers. The Nuggets qualified for the Playoffs nine times in a row from 1981 to 1990, helped by Alex English and Kiki Vandeweghe and were considered genuine contenders. In 2003, the Nuggets drafted Carmelo Anthony and with help of Head Coach George Karl, the Nuggets reached the playoffs nine times in a row. Some of the prominent players to have played for Denver Nuggets include Alex English, Carmelo Anthony, Allen Iverson etc.
After the departure of Carmelo, the Nuggets were involved in a three-team trade which saw them receive All-Star Andre Iguodala, while Dwight Howard was moved to LA Lakers. Head coach Karl Denver was fired despite winning the Coach of the Year.
Along with Karl being fired, Nuggets saw a shake-up in their front office with Masai Ujiri leaving for Toronto Raptors and vice-president Pete D'Alessandro going to Sacramento Kings. Brian Shaw was eventually replaced by Mike Malone.
Under Malone's stewardship, Denver started grooming their youth talents more rather than focusing on marquee signings. Iguodala was traded to Warriors in a sign-and-trade deal. The development of Nikola Jokić, Gary Harris and Emmanuel Mudiay were clear as the Nuggets were slowly but surely starting to look like contenders. They soon drafted Jamal Murray from Kentucky as well as Malik Beasley in the 2016 NBA Draft.
The Nuggets nearly made it to the 2018 playoffs but lost on the last day of the regular season to the Timberwolves. Their 2018-2019 season saw the breakout of Nikola Jokić as he was named to his first all-star and All-NBA Team. They narrowly lost out to the Trail Blazers in the second round.
The 2019-2020 Season saw the Nuggets make a trip to the Conference Finals. Jamal Murray went on a tear. The next season, Jokić would win the MVP but due to Jamal Murray’s injury, they couldn’t make it past the second round.
The Nuggets look to contend again and hope that their faith in Michael Porter Jr. pays off.
