James Johnson plays as a power forward for the Indiana Pacers in the NBA. He is known as a veteran leader of the team. Johnson was selected in the 2009 NBA Draft in the first round as the 16th pick by the Chicago Bulls. Before his NBA career, Johnson attended Cheyenne East High School in Cheyenne, Wyoming. As a four-star athlete in high school, Johnson later played college basketball at Wake Forest University. In the 2007–08 collegiate season, Johnson made an immediate impact as a freshman as he was named to the third-team All-ACC and finished second in the 2008 ACC Rookie of the Year voting. As a sophomore, Johnson helped the team achieve a 24–5 record and a #1 ranking during the 2008–09 season as he was named to the All-ACC third team for the second consecutive year.

After getting drafted into the NBA in 2009, Johnson went on to have a long NBA career in which he has played for 10 teams, as of 2025. He began his NBA journey with the Chicago Bulls, where he played from 2009 to 2011. Then he joined the Toronto Raptors for the 2011–2012 season. In 2012, he moved to the Sacramento Kings and played there until 2013. In the 2013–2014 season, Johnson played for the Memphis Grizzlies and then returned to the Toronto Raptors for a second stint from 2014 to 2016. Afterwards, he joined the Miami Heat, where he played from 2016 to 2020, his longest tenure at any team. In 2020, Johnson spent part of the season with the Minnesota Timberwolves before being traded to the Dallas Mavericks later that same year. In 2021, he played for the New Orleans Pelicans. He then joined the Brooklyn Nets for the 2021–2022 season. Since 2022, James Johnson has been a member of the Indiana Pacers and continues contributing as a veteran leader.
