He began his NBA journey with the Chicago Bulls, where he played from 2009 to 2011. Then he joined the Toronto Raptors for the 2011–2012 season. In 2012, he moved to the Sacramento Kings and played there until 2013. In the 2013–2014 season, Johnson played for the Memphis Grizzlies and then returned to the Toronto Raptors for a second stint from 2014 to 2016. Afterwards, he joined the Miami Heat, where he played from 2016 to 2020, his longest tenure at any team. In 2020, Johnson spent part of the season with the Minnesota Timberwolves before being traded to the Dallas Mavericks later that same year. In 2021, he played for the New Orleans Pelicans. He then joined the Brooklyn Nets for the 2021–2022 season. Since 2022, James Johnson has been a member of the Indiana Pacers and continues contributing as a veteran leader.
