How many rings does Kevin Durant have without Curry?

Currently playing for the Phoenix Suns, Kevin Durant is now entering his seventeenth season in the NBA. KD is one of those players that no matter what you do, there is nothing that bothers him. There is no scheme or defense that can stop Durant. At 6'11", KD has guard-like skills and can handle and shoot from anywhere on the floor. Just in the 2022/23 season, KD created a league of his own. For most star players in the NBA, a 50-40-90 (field goal, 3-point, and free throw percentages respectively) season is considered very efficient but Durant took it up a notch.

KD’s best days were with the Oklahoma City Thunder, where he won his one and only NBA MVP. He averaged a career-best 32.0 points per game in the 2013-14 season. On July 4, 2016, Durant announced that he was taking his talents to the Golden State Warriors, leaving the NBA world in shock. There are four reasons for this:

  • Durant was eliminated by Steph Curry in the 2016 Western Conference Finals

  • The Golden State Warriors had won 73 games in the regular season. A record that still stands.

  • OKC was up 3-1 to the Warriors but they blew their lead and got eliminated from the playoff contention.

  • Durant joining the Warriors was just unfair for the rest of the league because of how talented their roster already was.

Durant played three seasons with the Warriors and earned a trip to the Finals each time. He would have most likely three-peated with the Warriors but an Achilles injury to him, and Klay Thompson tearing his ACL, stopped them from accomplishing that feat.

Despite winning two championships and two finals MVPs, a lot of fans and NBA legends like Charles Barkley criticized his move to join a 73-win team. Some fans even believe that KD would just be another Carmelo Anthony (a great scorer who did not win a ring), if not for him joining the Warriors. Today we look at how many rings Durant has without the Golden State Warriors.

Has Durant won a championship outside of the Golden State Warriors?

No, Durant has yet to win a championship since leaving the Warriors. Alongside Steph Curry, Klay Thompson, and Draymond Green, KD won two consecutive championships with the Warriors and was also the Finals MVP on both occasions.

After a disappointing loss to the Toronto Raptors in the Finals, KD decided to join the Brooklyn Nets alongside superstars Kyrie Irving and James Harden. While the Nets became the number one offensive team in the league, their problem was the health of this trio. Durant missed 47 games, Irving missed 28 games, and Harden missed 38 games that season. In the 2020-21 playoff match-up against the Milwaukee Bucks, Durant put on an absolute show but still came up short due to injuries to his superstar teammates.

In the 2021-2022 season, it was a disaster for the Brooklyn Nets and Joe Tsai. It was mainly because of Irving’s stance on the COVID-19 vaccine. This led to James Harden demanding a trade, leaving Durant all alone, where he was swept by the Boston Celtics.

In the 2022/23 season, Durant featured in just eight regular season games for the Phoenix Suns. In the playoffs, the Suns, led by KD and Devin Booker, came up short against eventual NBA champions the Denver Nuggets. In 11 playoff games in 2023, KD averaged 29.0 points, 8.7 rebounds and 5.5 assists per game.

In the 2023-24 season, Kevin Durrant, Devin Booker and Jusuf Nurkić, led the Phoenix Suns to the playoffs. In the playoffs, the Suns came up short in the first round to the Minnesota Timberwolves led by Anthony Edwards and Karl-Anthony Towns.

This upcoming season may very well be the first season that Durant plays without having to worry about anything else, apart from hooping and winning games. It could also be a championship year, especially since the Suns also have other superstars like Bradley Beal and Royce O'Neale, the deeper bench players.
