Ricky Rubio

Ricky Rubio has been the standard for a backup point guard in the NBA. He embodies everything that a point guard needs to do and has demonstrated on more than one account that he is capable of running an NBA offense. Ricky Rubio was drafted by the Minnesota Timberwolves as the 5th overall pick in the 2009 draft and thus far in his NBA career, Rubio is most known for being drafted two picks over Stephen Curry. But this would be an unfair judgment of him and would do a disservice to the career of Ricky Rubio.

Even though in the NBA, Rubio is most known for being a solid point guard who occasionally makes flashy passes and is at best a fringe all-star, in Spain, Rubio is a basketball legend. Rubio has been a key part of the Spanish men’s national team and has been pivotal in Spain’s rise to the top of the basketball world to become one of the true basketball titans. He was crucial in leading Spain to the 2019 FIBA World Cup title and was named to the tournament’s All-Star Five.

Even though Rubio was drafted in the 2009 draft, he did not start his playing career until the 2010-11 season. After the NBA draft, Rubio returned to FC Barcelona to play two seasons there, leading them to the EuroLeague championship in 2010 and the Liga ACB championship in 2011. Rubio has also been pivotal in Spain’s Olympic ventures. He was part of the 2008 Spain team which won the silver medal and the 2016 Spain team which won the bronze.

Ricky Rubio Playing Position

Ricky Rubio is a quintessential pass-first point guard. He always looks to set his teammates up first before looking for his own shot. He is most known for his career with the Minnesota Timberwolves and the Utah Jazz. He helped the Jazz have multiple successful playoff runs, most notably against Oklahoma City Thunder in 2018 where the heavily favored Thunder were knocked out by the upstart Jazz in the first round. He is also known for being a pesky defender in the point guard position and is one of the best on-ball defenders there is in the point guard position.

What Number does Ricky Rubio wear?

Currently playing for the Cavaliers, Ricky Rubio wears the number 13. There is no particular for him to have selected that number other than the fact that when he got drafted by the Timberwolves, the number 9 was already taken. For the Spain team, however, Rubio wears the number 9 and has been doing so ever since he started playing basketball.
