Kadarius Toney is a Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver. He used to be on the New York Giants before getting traded in 2022. He has played three seasons in the NFL as of August 2024 and will be entering his fourth one with the Chiefs after getting a couple of Super Bowl rings in previous two years.

A standout high school player, Toney was heavily recruited by colleges before the three-star recruit eventually chose Florida as his college destination. While he served as a reserve in his first three seasons, his senior season saw a dramatic uptick in production. Leading the team in receptions and yards, he tripled as a runner and returner as well. His versatility landed him the first-team spot while also making him a finalist for the most versatile player, the Paul Hornung Award.

As an explosion seemed imminent, New York was quick to snatch him up. After a slow start to his career, attributed to a lack of training camp days due to COVID-19 protocols, Toney steadily increased his production. Soon after, he would break OBJ’s record as a Giants rookie for most yards, totaling 189 in Week 5. An oblique injury forced him to miss a part of the season. Coupled with additional time due to another bout with COVID, Toney would partake in just 10 games for the campaign. However, he still had the second-most receiving yards on his teams. A hamstring injury at the start of the 2022 season forced the trade from the Giants to the Chiefs.

However, during his final two seasons, he would wear the number 1. Shifting to the NFL. Toney wore the number 89 with the New York Giants and even had the number tattooed on his back, along with his name to resemble a jersey.

However, with a fresh start in Kansas, Toney sought a change in numbers. Toney’s lifelong friend and teammate at the high school level, Ja’Christopher McCants unfortunately lost his life in a tragic accident. At the time, he was 19 years old and wore the number 19. The two grew up together and even made music together. Kadarius also performs as a rapper under the name Yung Joka. To commemorate a shift in landscape and morale, plus an homage to his friend, Toney shifted from 89 to 19.

In Super Bowl 57, which was a hard-fought game, the Chiefs were in dire state until Toney set an NFL record with a 65-yard punt return in the fourth quarter. It was a glorious moment which shifted the scales of the encounter. Patrick Mahomes was able to capitalize with a touchdown and the Chiefs prevailed. As the dust cleared, Mahomes was the MVP, but Toney was the hero of the day, as he would also catch the invaluable touchdown that finally allowed the Chiefs to gain their first lead of the encounter.
