Dwight Powell: A Brief Biography

Dwight Harlan Powell is a Canadian professional basketball player who plays for the Dallas Mavericks of the National Basketball Association (NBA). He played his high school basketball for IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida. In his senior year, Powell averaged 23.2 points, 11.6 rebounds, 4.4 assists and 2.3 blocks per game. He was considered a five-star Recruit and was listed as the No. 8 power forward and the No. 25 player in the nation in 2010.


Powell enrolled into Stanford University. As a freshman in 2010-11, he averaged 8.1 points and 5.2 rebounds in 31 games and earned Pac-10 All-Freshman Team honors. He led the Cardinals to win the NIT Championship as a sophomore in 2011–12. In 35 games, he averaged 5.8 points and 4.6 rebounds per game earning him a Pac-12 All-Academic Honorable Mention.


In his junior year, Powell improved his game and was named the Pac-12 Most Improved Player of the Year. He averaged 14.9 points to go along with 8.4 rebounds per game and earned second-team NABC All-District, Pac-12 All-Academic second team honors, and first-team All-Pac-12. As a senior in 2013–14, Powell averaged 14.0 points and 6.9 rebounds per game and earned first-team All-Pac-12 honors for the second straight year. He was also named in Pac-12 All-Academic Honorable Mention selection and the Pac-12 Scholar-Athlete of the Year.


Powell was drafted as the 45th overall pick in the 2014 NBA Draft by the Charlotte Hornets. He was instantly traded to the Cleveland Cavaliers and was later traded to the Boston Celtics. In December 2014, Powell was again traded, this time to the Dallas Mavericks. In 2016, he re-signed with the Mavericks. In the 2016-2017 season, Powell scored a career- high 21 points against the Phoenix Suns. He tied his career-high twice, against the Golden State Warriors and the Oklahoma City Thunder in the 2017-18 season.
